I’m constantly on the lookout for more cafés that I can turn into homes away from home, places where the coffee is good and not too expensive, where I can get a delicious lunch if I need to but don’t feel obligated to chow down if I’m not hungry, where the staff is polite or even kind. Friends, I’ve got a new home away from home to recommend.
The first time I ever visited La Compagnie du Café, I had noticed, firstly, its glass front wall, allowing scads of natural light in, and secondly, the fact that it remained opened until 7pm. Most cafés boasting filter coffee only remain open until around 4 or 5, making it tough to settle in and get down to work, so I decided to give my new discovery a try.
The dining room is large and airy, with quite a few tables. At lunchtime, it can get a bit busy, and sometimes the staff is forced to ask me (or other people just drinking coffee) to move to a different table. They’re so kind and lovely about this that I don’t mind at all.
They usually have four filter coffees to choose from at a time, and the baristas are excellent at making suggestions based on what you like.
They’re also excellent at latte art.
The popularity of Buddha bowls in Paris is something that fills me with no small amount of glee. La Compagnie du Café always has a few on its menu, which change with the seasons. I’ve recently tried both the winter veggie bowl and Buddha bowl, each of which is an excellent and filling lunchtime option.
When you’re too caffeinated, there’s always a juice option, as well as this little ginger shot that’s spicy and delicious.
La Compagnie may be a bit out of the way for this Left Bank resident, but I don’t mind even a bit.
