Maine may be known for lobster rolls, but did you know it’s also one of the best spots for ice cream? The state is rife with artisanal ice cream shops (so much so that one of the only English words my French father-in-law mastered was “ice cream”).
Together, we sampled two delicious spots.
The first was in Kennebunkport, the town where we rented our AirBnB. Rococo is known for its avant-garde flavors (i.e. weird ones I’m totally bonkers for). On any given day, the selection might include rosemary-infused caramel, banana Red Hot, or blueberry chipotle, but on my visit, I was swept away by goat cheese, blackberry, and Chambord – the perfect combo between savory and sweet.
The second stop we tried was not far from the Nubble Lighthouse – in fact, Dunne’s is so close that it affords a view of the lighthouse itself from the ample seating area just outside.
As far as ice cream is concerned, this is much more of a classic roadside stand, but there are more than a handful of intriguing flavors to keep you interested. I opted for a double scoop of Black Raspberry Explosion (which boasts little chocolate-covered raspberry candies) and Almond Joy.
Give either (or both!) a try the next time you’re in Maine!
