1. When I was growing up, my favorite movie in the world was The Little Mermaid. I was so happy to get to see the real thing when I was in Copenhagen, though it took me a while to snap this photo — everyone crowds around her and wants to see her.
2. One of the things I loved about visiting Copenhagen is that since I had a friend there doing study abroad, I got a bit of a closer look at the culture there than I would have usually had, notably the Scandinavian concept of hygge. It’s been approximately translated as “coziness,” but the best way to understand hygge is in a café or coffeeshop like Bevar’s (where I also had the opportunity to taste some delicious Smørrebrød, but more on that on Wednesday.)
3. Some parts of central Copenhagen, like the port, look like they’re out of a fairy tale, with their bright colors.
4. I couldn’t leave Denmark without tasting a Danish. This is a cinnamon roll from perhaps the most famous Copenhagen bakery, Sankt Peders Bageri. I didn’t make it there on a Wednesday, when they make special cinnamon rolls, but the one that I tried was delicious anyway.
5. You’re not supposed to take photos in Christiania, but as we hiked amongst some of the more hidden houses, I saw these beautifully colored snails and couldn’t help myself. I hope they don’t mind!
