It’s strange to think that just a few years ago, there was nowhere in Paris I wanted to go to sit, drink coffee, and read, and now, I’m up to my gills in different spots that welcome visitors to do just that. Spoune has become a new regular haunt for me, not in the least because the choice of décor in this spot is wall-to-wall bookshelves, i.e., heaven.
Spoune is larger than many similar spots in the city, boasting ample seating space. This is a major plus for me, seeing as I happen to live unfortunately far from most great coffee spots, and occasionally, after 45 minutes of travel, I end up disappointed to see there are no seats to be had.
Like most coffee shops of its ilk in Paris, Spoune relies heavily on American influence with regards to its food: quick breads, cookies, and muffins are on the menu, as are granola and cheesecake, both of which are popular options when they appear on the ever-changing menu.
There’s also a short, seasonal selection of savory dishes like sandwiches and salads. This lentil salad with herbs, pomegranate, avocado, and feta was bit underseasoned, as far as I’m concerned, but the price is right.
Spone also apparently serves brunch on the weekends, but I tend to be more of a weekday visitor, so I have yet to give these offerings a try.
My go-to here, of course, is the filter coffee: I love the brightly-colored mugs as much as I love what’s in them. The coffee is a dark roast and has been dubbed overly bitter by some reviewers, but I’ve got to say, I’m a fan.
