Yes, I know that it’s blistering out everywhere, and the last thing you probably want to eat is steak in a butter-laden sauce, but I have a reason for posting this now, even if you need to bookmark the recipe for fall’s cooler days.
You see, it was my birthday a few days ago. I turned 24 (I’m not shy with my age, like some), and the day after, my second article on Flipkey was published, an article that highlights both this recipe (available over there) and a much more personal victory: as the Valedictorian at my little sister’s graduation day said, the same day I turned 24: “In the words of Elle Woods, we did it!”
Of course, in my case, it’s more of an I did it. I wish I could travel back in time and whisper into the ear of the eleven-year-old sitting on her bedroom floor, typing furiously on the keys of her very first Vaio laptop: “Keep going, you’ll get there.”
This year is the very first where I managed to live entirely on my own income: no help from Mom and Dad (not that they didn’t offer — I just put it into high interest savings and pretended it didn’t exist). I’m no longer a “writer,” sitting in the Parisian’s apartment in the 5th, typing away furiously and selling nothing at all. I make my living writing. I feel like a writer.
Of course, the fact that I manage to make this living writing about things I love — travel, cinema, food — makes the victory all the sweeter. Gone are the days when I pounce on any job that passes my way; I have earned the right to be picky, to choose publications I love, and to write things that I love. Flipkey — a site that allows me to write about food and travel, is just one of the many reasons I am so firmly attached to my Dell laptop, and also one of the reasons why, at 1:00 PM on a Thursday, I can go sit at the beach with my dad.
You’ll be getting Long Island recipes soon — clams, fish, fresh corn and tomatoes. I just though you, the people who have let me grow and expand in both my cooking and writing repertoires, might like to share this moment with me… and of course, a very delicious Parisian recipe.
Ha, I wish we were having warm weather. It’s been unseasonably wet around here lately. I guess I shouldn’t complain because back East its horribly hot, but at least here I’m still eating cool weather food!
